Academy Award Nominations

Once again the Academy proves that they don't actually think about the nominations or winners for the lesser awards by nominating Star Trek and not District 9 for best make up. Also 10 best picture nominations is really ridiculous. I am happy that District 9 and Up were nominated (especially Up) but I don't believe that they would have been if the Academy didn't need to fill up 10 slots. Right now I believe that Avatar is going to win best picture and be one of those movies that a few years from now no one will understand why it won. I haven't seen Avatar and don't really have any opinion about it, but if it does win I don't understand why The Dark Knight or other highly praised scifi/fantasy/animated/etc movies are usually ignored in favor of the usual, dull dramas.

I have no idea if it'll stand the test of time when it comes to the plot. Hopefully with Avatar and Star Trek in the line-up, we're in for more decent sci-fi movies getting the credit they deserve. Or it could just be a flavor of the week sort of thing. Who knows...

Star Trek was only nominated for technical awards. District 9 on the the other hand was nominated for Best Movie and Best Adapted Screenplay. I really do hope that sci-fi is being taken seriously though. It doesn't help that most sci-fi movies are terrible.
