Once again the Academy proves that they don't actually think about the nominations or winners for the lesser awards by nominating Star Trek and not District 9 for best make up. Also 10 best picture nominations is really ridiculous. I am happy that District 9 and Up were nominated (especially Up) but I don't believe that they would have been if the Academy didn't need to fill up 10 slots. Right now I believe that Avatar is going to win best picture and be one of those movies that a few years from now no one will understand why it won. I haven't seen Avatar and don't really have any opinion about it, but if it does win I don't understand why The Dark Knight or other highly praised scifi/fantasy/animated/etc movies are usually ignored in favor of the usual, dull dramas.

Avatar really was amazing. I went in thinking I was going to hate it and actually enjoyed it. Visually it's beautiful. I honestly think that it got recognition when The Dark Knight didn't is because of who directed it: James Cameron. While Christopher Nolan is a great director, he hasn't had the same success as Cameron.

I still need to see it but from what I've heard the story is kind of weak. I'm just wondering if once the hype dies down it will still be viewed as being amazing. Is the academy actually recognizing a good sci-fi movie and accepting sci-fi as a genre or are they caving into hype? The reaction from the internet is that while it deserves all the technical awards it doesn't deserve best picture. Although it's nomination hasn't received nearly as much hate as The Blind Side's has. I only saw two of the nominated movies and I know neither of them are going to win so I personally don't care if Avatar wins. The only nomination that really bugged me was Best Make Up.

I have no idea if it'll stand the test of time when it comes to the plot. Hopefully with Avatar and Star Trek in the line-up, we're in for more decent sci-fi movies getting the credit they deserve. Or it could just be a flavor of the week sort of thing. Who knows...

Star Trek was only nominated for technical awards. District 9 on the the other hand was nominated for Best Movie and Best Adapted Screenplay. I really do hope that sci-fi is being taken seriously though. It doesn't help that most sci-fi movies are terrible.
