Once again the Academy proves that they don't actually think about the nominations or winners for the lesser awards by nominating Star Trek and not District 9 for best make up. Also 10 best picture nominations is really ridiculous. I am happy that District 9 and Up were nominated (especially Up) but I don't believe that they would have been if the Academy didn't need to fill up 10 slots. Right now I believe that Avatar is going to win best picture and be one of those movies that a few years from now no one will understand why it won. I haven't seen Avatar and don't really have any opinion about it, but if it does win I don't understand why The Dark Knight or other highly praised scifi/fantasy/animated/etc movies are usually ignored in favor of the usual, dull dramas.

Avatar really was amazing. I went in thinking I was going to hate it and actually enjoyed it. Visually it's beautiful. I honestly think that it got recognition when The Dark Knight didn't is because of who directed it: James Cameron. While Christopher Nolan is a great director, he hasn't had the same success as Cameron.
